Consumer Debt Management
If you are facing a financial crisis, don’t feel as if you are the only one. Most people in this world have been through similar circumstances. Maybe you lost your job, and this has caused you to be short on cash. Perhaps there has been sickness in your family that has caused you to have a lot of unexpected medical bills. Maybe you went on one credit card spending spree too many. Whatever the reason, you’ve started to have trouble paying your bills on time. You’ve started to dread mail delivery, because it seems you are always receiving past due notices from your creditors. And the telephone! Every time it rings, you cringe, for if you answer, it’s likely to be a collection agency. You’ve started to worry that maybe you will lose your car or your house because you always seem to be running short of money. You need a crash course in debt management. Fortunately for you, there are many options available to consumers that will help you keep your head above water and successfully manage your debt. The most basic option is simply to sit down and make a list of how much money comes into your household each month, and how much you spend on paying bills and other necessities of life. You must list all of your expenses – utility costs, food, personal items, transportation, insurance premiums, mortgage and car payments, all the way down to what you spend on clothing, eating out, and even your afternoon cup of specialty coffee. By writing everything down, you can more easily identify your spending habits and patterns. You’ll be able to see what is necessary spending, and what is frivolous. By cutting out unnecessary spending, you will in a sense “find” money you didn’t realize you had. This money can be used toward paying down your credit card balances. Next, take a deep breath, sit down, and call all of your creditors. Be honest with them. Tell them you are having cash flow problems, and ask if they could possibly work with you by developing a modified payment plan that will let you pay a smaller amount each month until you can get a better grip on your debt problem. Don’t wait too long to take this step. Once the credit card companies have turned your account over to a collection agency, they won’t be in a position to help you. Consumer debt management calls for determination and discipline. If you are lacking a little in either one, you may be able to help yourself by getting in touch with a credit counseling organization. These businesses have trained professionals who can assist you once they know your financial history. They can help you to create a workable budget, and a personal plan of action to help you improve your financial situation, or they may possibly refer you to a debt management plan offered by credit counseling agencies in your area. A debt management plan helps you by requiring that you deposit money with the credit counseling agency in the total amount of your monthly unsecured debts. The agency then pays the bills for you, going by a payment schedule they have developed by consulting your creditors. This is a surefire way of getting out of debt within a set period of time, usually several years. You sign a contract and are obligated to follow through, plus there is a chance you will also be asked to sign a statement in which you agree not to apply for any type of additional credit while you are working with the plan. Consumer debt management has many facets. You should do your own research to find out what is available to help you get out of debt and clear your credit record.
